Leaders Debate Special:

National Catastrophic Drug Coverage ignored during debate

Dear One & All,

Last night, the leaders of the Bloc, Conservatives, Liberals, and NDP took each other on in an open debate live in front of the nation. Under the format of the debate, only approximately 15 minutes were devoted to a discussion on health. Within this 1/4 of an hour debate, there was only one mention of the rising cost of prescription drugs, as NDP leader Jack Layton indicated that it was a concern for all Canadians.

Stephen Harper delivered comments consistent with the Conservative’s platform surrounding not dabbling into service delivery, and not making health a federal issue. I was frustrated that the debate didn’t touch more on some of the major issues within health, specifically a national catastrophic drug coverage plan.

It is clear that we need to bring our voices together and ensure that a national strategy for addressing rising drug costs is on the agenda of the next government. Coordination of such an effort can only occur with the cooperation and leadership of a federal government that is concerned about ensuring that there is consistency in the care Canadians receive regardless of their postal code. Where you live shouldn’t determine if you live.

What did you think of the federal debate? What message would you like to pass along to the federal leaders surrounding catastrophic drug coverage? Share your thoughts and ideas with us on Twitter or Facebook.
