Mike Kennedy’s 2011 Federal Election Blog – Part 1
Dear One & All,
I’d like to welcome you to C2CC’s 2011 federal election blog. My name is Mike Kennedy, and I volunteered with the C2CC Cancer Day of Action on Nov.3rd 2010 in Halifax. Along with 35 other advocates, we met with provincial officials and helped get our provincial Minister of Health and Wellness, Maureen MacDonald, to commit to putting catastrophic drug coverage on the national healthcare agenda. Now its time to push ahead and have every party commit their support.
Over the next several weeks, I’ll be providing online coverage and analysis of the federal election – focusing on each of the major party’s stances on an issue of great importance: a National Catastrophic Drug Coverage plan.
While drug coverage is not a federal issue, the unprecedented challenges facing our health system create an opportunity for our elected officials to develop unprecedented solutions. The groundwork for one such solution, a unified national approach to drug coverage, has already been laid. Up to now, there has been insufficient action. You can read more here on what can be done by our elected officials to leverage the buying power of an entire country, rather than the current practice of purchasing remedies at a provincial level.
Leading up to May 2nd, I’ll be using Twitter to engage election candidates across the country in a dialogue about Catastrophic Drug Coverage. I will be asking the simple question in 140 characters:
“If elected, what will you and your party do to ensure the federal government establishes a minimum standard of drug coverage for all Canadians?”
An update on individual candidates and their party’s stances on this issue will be posted each Monday morning on www.fairtreatment.ca and the C2CC homepage: www.controlcancer.ca.
I invite you to stay connected with us and join the conversation over the course of the election as C2CC continues its efforts to tell candidates and elected officials that where Canadians live shouldn’t determine if they live.
I’d also encourage you to connect with your local candidates – ask them what their plan is for addressing catastrophic drug coverage and perhaps most importantly, share your stories.
In the spirit of peace, order and good government,
Mike
